5/22/2023 0 Comments Forever by Maggie Stiefvater![]() ![]() Simply put…amazing! Linger by Maggie Stiefvater Can’t wait to get lost in Stiefvater’s world again. Add in Jack, Beck and Isabel(who completely grew on me by the end) and you have a perfect Romeo and Juliette-esq story with a modern twist. She knew what she wanted and really wouldn’t let anyone stop her. And Grace was witty, charming and strong. ![]() Sam was just so sweet and innocent not wanting to hurt Grace at all. Stiefvater has created such great characters with such an amazing lanuage it was easy to forget it was a supernatural book. Thank god I did! How could I not have fallen in love with this story?!? Between the amazingly creative descriptions that made you feel you were in Mercy Falls and the love story of Grace and Sam I was immediately sold. Honestly I’m not really into the vampire/werewolf/supernatural kind of books, but this was suggested to me so I took a leap of faith and read it. But as winter nears, Sam must fight to stay human-or risk losing himself, and Grace, forever. ![]() Now, Grace meets a yellow-eyed boy whose familiarity takes her breath away. In summer, a few precious months of being human… until the cold makes him shift back again. Meanwhile, Sam has lived two lives: In winter, the frozen woods, the protection of the pack, and the silent company of a fearless girl. One yellow-eyed wolf-her wolf-is a chilling presence she can't seem to live without. For years, Grace has watched the wolves in the woods behind her house. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() One thing is for certain: this book is a labour of love, constructed with the fierce attention to detail that distinguishes all of Mitchell’s work. There will be Mitchellians far better equipped than I am for such a game, and in any case, it doesn’t get us any nearer to assessing Utopia Avenue as a novel in its own right. But I’m not going to give in to to this temptation, at least not any more. Here’s Dr Marinus, found in The Thousand Autumns and The Bone Clocks too and Luisa Rey, last seen in Cloud Atlas from 2004. The band’s bassist, Dean Moss, shares a Gravesend childhood with Holly Sykes of The Bone Clocks, Mitchell’s last novel, which appeared in 2014. Let’s start by noting that the lead guitarist in the eponymous band of this capacious new book is one Jasper de Zoet it doesn’t take a horologist to discern the link to The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet, published in 2010. These web pages are a delightfully spoddy assessment of the ways in which Mitchell’s novels – he has called the whole project his “über-novel” – can be linked one to another. The temptation, in reviewing a new novel by David Mitchell, is to approach the process along the lines of the “David Mitchell Universe Wikia”. ![]() ![]() ![]() I don’t trust politicians who act like they know everything about everything: each one of us has our own background of knowledge, is competent on certain topics but has to put some time into studying others, and you have to do it while also putting yourself in the shoes of someone who sees things differently from you. Here, Vogue checks in with Schlein.Įlly Schlein: Well, first thing, you need a very basic ingredient, and that is to be very convinced of what you are saying. Her past two months have seen a rollercoaster of events both political and otherwise: Schlein flew to Brussels for discussions with the leaders of the Party of European Socialists she announced the new secretariat of the Partito Democratico, made up of equal parts men and women (including Egyptian-born Marwa Mahmoud) and indirectly suffered the outing of her partner Paola Belloni, who had hitherto managed to remain out of the media spotlight. And still (or precisely for this reason) everyone wants her, everyone follows her, everyone wants to know where she is going to take the Italian left. ![]() ![]() Since her nomination as leader of the Partito Democratico on February 26, 2023-becoming the first woman to take this role-the 38-year-old former Europarliamentarian and ex-vice president of the Emilia-Romagna region has not granted interviews to magazines. She gave it new youth, demasculinized it, and projected it into an international arena. Elly Schlein has done to Italian politics what Måneskin has done to Italian music. ![]() ![]() ![]() In the book, when a character has an anaphylactic allergic reaction, she is taken to a doctor's office. I also liked that Hayley doesn't really get away with anything, and has to face the consequences of her actions.įinally, I will note that while I totally appreciate the author's efforts in promoting food allergy awareness, I think the incident of anaphylaxis as described in the book doesn't really do a good job of spreading accurate information. Papademetriou did a great job depicting the way a teenager might really justify engaging in behavior that they know to be wrong. I found it particularly interesting that in this book, Hayley made a series of bad decisions, the kinds that are probably typical among teenagers. To be honest, there really isn't a lot of cheer in this book, other than the hope that comes with a couple budding friendships. While struggling through her parents' divorce, she loses her two best friends, she pines over a crush, and she finds herself the victim of mean girl behavior. Okay, she has a particular talent for baking cupcakes, and happens to be able to sell them in her grandmother's cafe, but otherwise she really seems normal. ![]() She's just a regular kid, trying to deal with regular middle school problems. ![]() I liked that Hayley continued to be relatable. Besides fleshing out some characters with autism and food allergies, she also introduces a new character who is Latino. ![]() In this sequel to Save the Cupcake!, Lisa Papademetriou continues her commitment to diversity. ![]() 5/22/2023 0 Comments Dandy Day by Annie Wood![]() ![]() It would be cathartic even if I wasn’t a writer. Journaling feels like talking to myself silently and sorting out the files in my mind as well as an emotional venting. ![]() ![]() It’s been a great comfort all of these years, knowing that the page awaits me with anything I choose to put on it. Still, I know that it’s there and I also know that it’s ready to take in my words of frustration, pain, joy or just facts, at any time. My daily journaling habit has often shifted from daily to weekly to monthly to sometimes just a few times a year. I have a collection of more than twenty hard copy journals and then I have the thousands of pages on my computer journal that I started ten years ago. "May all the days of your life be filled with much joy and adventure and may you take the time to write some of it down." My dad gave me my first journal on my tenth birthday. The twenty plus journals I have could very well be the first thing I save if their was a fire in my house, after saving the husband and dog first, of course. ![]() 5/22/2023 0 Comments Ben hatke books![]() "Jack and Zita make a stunning team in this high-stakes adventure-a must for fans of both series. It's a lot of responsibility, and it's boring, too, because Maddy doesn't talk. ![]() ![]() But he's got a good reason: summer is when his single mom takes a second job and leaves him at home to watch his autistic kid sister, Maddy. "Readers can hope this is the beginning of many adventures with this crew, but if it turns out to be the end of both series, well, it’s an utterly satisfying one." - The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books 203 pages : 23 cm Jack might be the only kid in the world who's dreading summer. "Hatke offers up a hit parade of characters both human and otherwise, with plenty of fearsome creatures in his classic style." - Booklist "Retaining the humor, daring exploits, and dynamic cartooning of Hatke’s previous books, the crossover is enjoyable and satisfying, if at times a tad predictable, and could serve as either a solid epilogue to both series or as the start of a new chapter in a larger shared universe." - Publishers Weekly "Hatke's latest adventure is a wonderful and exciting page-turner, seamlessly blending dragons, giants, robots, and portals to other worlds, creating instant appeal for almost any young fan of graphic novels, fantasy, fairy tales, or science fiction.Perfection." - Kirkus, starred review ![]() 5/22/2023 0 Comments Books like radio silence![]() ![]() Frances’ mother asks if there is something more happening, but they don’t want or need that type of relationship with each other.
