5/21/2023 0 Comments Orangutan by Rita GoldnerOrang-utan lives in the canopy in the tropical rainforest. Understanding how they live now will help us protect them. While the environment shown is pristine, these creatures are severely threatened by the destruction of the forest. I'm glad I read this book on International Orangutan Day and I can heartily recommend it to anyone considering a book for young children. The story is not long and a young reader can flick through it in ten minutes or so, but by paying attention to the words they will easily learn the meaning of terms like canopy, vine, frugivore - as well as bellyflop! We understand that they all depend on the wild jungle for their living and by eating differently they can share the space. I especially enjoy that we see the whole colourful habitat, with the other animals and birds that inhabit the forest. We follow young Orangutan as he lives with his mother in the canopy, licking the rain off his fur, finding durian and figs to eat, making comfy nests to sleep in and evading the odd predator. What a beautiful book! I can't express how much I admire the art and writing which has brought this rainforest into my room.

I liked having that long span of time to see different moments in Michael’s life and how they affected him at the time and upon reflection.Īll in all, this is a powerful story about self-discovery and courage and learning how to be true to yourself. The story begins when Michael is a child and runs through his early time at college, so I think it’s more of a coming-of-age story than traditional young adult fiction. Even the characters who only appeared for a few moments seemed rich and knowable. I also loved the characters, from Michael’s mom and sister, Anna, to his best friend Daisy, to Jack, the repressed construction worker. I felt like that made the story a lot more intimate if that makes sense? Some of the poems are meant to be his, things he has written and performs. I think part of what makes that work is that he’s a poet himself, and the novel is written in verse, too. One of my favorite things about this book is how personal Michael’s journey is. The Black Flamingo is his debut YA novel. He regularly performs across the UK and internationally and his work has been shortlisted for the Polari First Book Prize and appeared on MTV and BET. Obviously it took me a while to read it, but I’m so glad I finally did. Dean Atta’s poems deal with themes of race, gender, and identity. Early on in the pandemic, I placed a couple of book orders with independent bookstores, and THE BLACK FLAMINGO is one of the books I ordered. It would be many years before any of Kierkegaard’s works would be translated from Danish into English, and yet the themes of desperation and self-examination must have thoroughly permeated the Zeitgeist of the day. But it’s quite unlikely that he’d read Kierkegaard’s The Sickness Unto Death, published that same year. Melville had surely read Thoreau’s Civil Disobedience which came out in 1849. But to really convey what it’s all about is something far more demanding.įirst published in 1853, the story appeared in a time of great awakening in New England and great revolutions in Europe. The story itself is short and easy enough to summarize. “Bartleby, the Scrivener”, while hardly the Leviathan which is Melville’s magnum opus, Moby Dick, remains one of the author’s most enigmatic works. At the same time, I’d like to think I can tickle the fancy of older audiences as well. With these extended poems, I’m reworking classic works of Gothic and Romantic fiction, in hopes of making them more accessible to new audiences. This lyrical retelling of Herman Melville’s “Bartleby, the Scrivener” is part of an ongoing series, entitled Simply Gothic. He brought his sick children to show to the people that he is also affected by the plague. The king expresses sympathy to the town’s people on the sickness plaguing them. The Gods Are Not To Blame is a book written by Nigerian author Laura remembered that sugaring off, and the dance that followed, for the rest of her life.Įach season has its work, which Laura makes attractive by the good things that result. They return home with buckets of syrup, enough to last the year. Later that winter, the Ingalls go to Grandma Ingalls’ house and have a “sugaring off,” when they harvest sap and make maple syrup. The cousins come for Christmas that year, and Laura receives a rag doll, which she names Charlotte. Fall is a very busy time, because the harvest from the garden and fields must be brought in as well. This is all in preparation for the upcoming winter. Laura gathers wood chips, and helps Ma and Pa when they butcher animals and preserve the meat. Hard work is the rule, though fun is often made in the midst of it. It does not contain the more mature (yet real) themes addressed in later books of the series (danger from American Indians, serious illness, death, drought, and crop destruction). The novel describes the homesteading skills Laura observed and began to practice during her fifth year.
